Dacia Gallery is pleased to present The Human System, a solo exhibition of recent work by Erin Anderson: Erin is a realist artist whose oils portray the human figure ensconced in biomorphic copper abstractions. Her work explores modern paradigms of human relationships to one another and the environment. Secondary themes in her work explore modern issues of gender and identity. Using both traditional and contemporary techniques, she has pushed the boundaries of painting and surface. This exhibition showcases fourteen individual portraits painstakingly rendered in oil on copper. Each portrait is seemingly locked within the confines of its own picture plane. Bold expressions of form, referenced from systems in nature, are etched into the background. Upon first glance, the subjects in her work exist separate from each other, isolated in their environment. When explored further, isolated imagery gives way to a flowing, continuous system acting as a unifying element between each piece. The juxtaposition of isolation vs. connection examines modern attitudes toward human relationships as well as contemporary perceptions of human vs. environment. Erin Anderson (b. 1987, Waterville, Ohio) has exhibited widely throughout the United States. Most notably exhibiting in such institutions as The Grand Rapids Art Museum, Grand Rapids, MI and The State Museum of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA among others. Her work has also been included in numerous group exhibitions and is found in collections throughout the country. Ms. Anderson lives and works in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. She is represented by Dacia Gallery in New York.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I am inspired by complex dynamics and relationships within individuals and groups. Working on copper sheet, my compositions remain anchored in representational figure painting juxtaposed by abstraction. The metal substrate and paint work in concert to communicate layers or levels of reality: one that is easily perceived and directly in front of us and one that can be felt and is dynamic or changing. To explore the connective nature of our experience, I make visual comparisons between the figure and systems in nature. I find that studying the ways in which nature is connected informs the ways I create atmosphere within and around my subjects. The ensuing work is an exploration of our relationships to one another and our fundamental connection with the environment.
