ARTIST BIO

Luis Colan is an emerging artist committed to the tradition of oil of painting, focusing in recent years in landscape painting, both in the studio and in Plein Air. Working from direct observation allows him to think quickly and to respond to light and climate changes as they occur during the painting session. Plein Air painting allows him to see and record colors and moods accurately while acquiring the knowledge necessary for the development of studio pieces. The limited time he has working outdoors forces him to focus, enabling him to connect emotionally to his surroundings, creating paintings that explore and celebrate life as it happens.

Luis has been active in New York City since 2004, after graduating with a BFA from the Hartford Art School at the University of Hartford. While at H.A.S. he studied under distinguished realist painters Stephen Brown, Jeremiah Patterson, and Fred Wessel. Under Pat Lipsky, Luis was introduced to abstraction, a style of painting vital to his sense of color in the work he’s produced since his time there. After moving to New York, Luis has continued his education by attending the Art Students League of New York, the Teaching Studios of Art in Brooklyn, and partaking in numerous events and workshops, including a Plain Air workshop in Tuscany in 2013. He has been exhibiting in New York and surrounding areas in several group shows, two solo exhibitions and in 2010 became a Junior Member at the Salmagundi Club where he remains active and exhibits continuously.
