Dacia Gallery is proud to announce it’s Artist Residency Program for summer 2014 in picturesque, Sibiu, Romania. The city is located in Transylvania at the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains. Dacia's Artist Residency provides an academic program to inspire, refine and redefine the creative direction of artists in a painting intensive two-week program. Artists will meet daily at Dacia's Artist Studio, located in the center of Sibiu's two grand plazas, in the catacombs beneath the Catholic Basilica that once served as a secretive masonic temple. This expansive hall of exposed brick-vaulted ceilings is where the artist shall paint the figure from life. On the weekdays when landscape classes are held, artists will flee the catacombs to paint the old city, its churches, plazas, restaurants and cafes that line the cobblestone streets. Trips will also be taken outside the old city to the surrounding villages that are still untouched by modernization. Here artists can find inspiration to paint in the open fields, cascading rivers and the surrounding mountain peaks. As for the nights and weekends, artists may find themselves at the studio painting, or mingling with friends at one of the many restaurants, cafes, pubs, or enjoying concerts, theatrical shows and weekend fairs in the grand plaza. Additionally, the weekends include field trips to several regional art and history museums and medieval Byzantine monasteries to study ancient frescos and icons. And what’s a trip to Romania without a visit through the mysterious forests and serpentines that lead to the medieval castle of Vlad the Impaler, otherwise known as Dracula. Lastly, Dacia Gallery will host a celebration commencing the end of the artistic journey with the resident artists. The resident artists will also participate in a group exhibition in New York City displayed at Dacia Gallery.

Invitation to Artists: Dacia Gallery invites emerging and established artists to participate in this exciting summer Artist Residency program. The application is open to visual artists worldwide, including all mediums and styles of artwork. The residency is on a first come, first served basis, with a limit of only 10 available spots for artists to participate. Art classes will alternate between figurative and plein air painting. Additionally, Lee Vasu, the founder and curator of Dacia Gallery, will be present to discuss The Business of Art, explaining the inner workings of the art world and how to successfully market one's artistic career to achieve representation by a gallery or an arts institution. Lee will also assist each artist in preparing for the group exhibition in New York City.

Bring a Friend: Some artists have been asking if they can attend the residency with another artist friend or with a husband or wife. Yes you may. If you and a friend would like to attend and share housing, you both have to apply separately and then let us know that you will be rooming together and we will make the arrangements for you. This will be an exciting adventure and fun to share with a friend. Many of the artists that are attending the residency are bringing friends or spouses with them. Please let us know if you want to do the same.

Sibiu, Romania (Hermannstadt): is a medieval city in Transylvania, Romania, with a population of approximately 150,000 and located 130 miles northwest of Bucharest. RESIDENCY COURSES & EVENTS

Mondays & Tuesdays: Morning classes are structured on drawing the model from life to strengthen basic drawing fundamentals of composition, line, proportions, depth and movement of the human figure. Afternoon classes are geared towards painting the model using oil paints and other preferred mediums. Artists will explore the nature of oil painting techniques by creating flesh tones, values, visual perception and the proportions of compositional structure in figure painting from life.

Wednesdays & Thursdays: Experience plein air painting of landscapes and cityscapes by painting on location in Sibiu and the surrounding countryside. Discover the landscape by learning perspective, color theory and depth. Create dynamic compositions of the landscape in impressionist and realism methods by using alla prima painting techniques and by learning how to organize visual elements forming the image of the landscape.

Fridays: Will be designated as an open studio day to complete paintings in the morning. In the afternoon we will take field trips to museums, cultural institutions and ancient monasteries to study art. On designated Fridays we will travel to the mountains to explore, paint, sketch and enjoy traditional Romanian culinary cuisines.

Saturdays & Sundays: Artists will spend the first weekend in Sibiu exploring and familiarizing themselves with the city, and on Sunday night we will have a Welcome to Romania Celebration in Piata Mica. During the residency, artists will visit, Vlad the Impaler's (Dracula's) Castle for an overnight expedition of drawing and exploration of the castle and the surrounding village. Additionally artists will visit the village of Sibiel to explore the Museum of Icons on Glass, as well as the Brukenthal Museum, Astra Museum, Sambata Monastery, and the Transfagarasean Valley and Mountains. At the end of the residency program a commencement celebration will be held for the resident artists and prepare for the New York City exhibition.

Residency News Update: We are pleased to announce that we have a multicultural group of artists attending the Sibiu Artist Residency. Currently we have artists coming to Sibiu from South Korea, France, Italy, Canada, Australia, England, Romania and the United States.
